Liberals committed to bringing Otama submarine ashore
An elected Liberal Nationals Government will work with the Oberon Association, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council and the Western Port Chamber of Commerce to finally bring the Otama submarine ashore in Hastings.
Since the Otama Submarine arrived in Western Port, 17 years ago, there have been a number of feasibility studies and business cases put forward, with each clearly showing what a great tourist attraction the Otama would be for Hastings and the wider Western Port region.
Victoria has had Labor Governments for 15 out of the last 19 years and during that time, those Labor Governments have refused to provide assistance to bring our submarine ashore.
The previous Liberal Government committed $1 million towards bringing the submarine ashore, however when the Andrews Government was elected, it immediately cancelled that funding.
The permission to use the land to bring the Otama ashore, provided by the previous Liberal Government, is still in place and so now all we need is the money to get it done.
The $1 million we are committing here today, to help bring the Otama ashore, is just the catalyst needed to get this crucial work started.
Today we are announcing that an elected Liberal National government will again provide $1 million, as a launching pad, to finally bring our submarine ashore.
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Tourism, Heidi Victoria:
“The Otama will be a major tourism boon for the township of Hastings and for the wider Western Port community, including for local shops and business owners.
The opportunity to climb inside a real Oberon Class submarine, and to experience things the way her submariner crew did, when she was operational, will be an enormous drawcard for tens of thousands of visitors every year, from all over the world.
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Small and Medium Enterprise, Neale Burgess:
“The Otama Submarine is a unique and historic vessel, that once brought ashore, will quickly become one of Victoria’s biggest tourism attractions.
The Western Australian Museum has an Oberon Class submarine on display and people line up there for hours, just to get the chance to go on-board.
The combination of this wonderful submarine, with its distinguished service, being located in Hastings, with its incredible maritime history, is a tourism opportunity too good to miss.”
