Liberal Nationals announce Rowville Rail protections for train corridor
The Rowville Rail land corridor will be protected by a Matthew Guy led Liberal Nationals Government, under new planning provisions announced on Friday by David Davis, Shadow Minister for Public Transport.
Planning provisions set will be the first step of a rail line all the way to Rowville. A planning overlay on the public land will prevent land in the rail corridor being used for anything other than public transport.
This announcement continues on from the $2 million Rowville Rail Feasibility Study completed by the previous Liberal Nationals Government which Labor have ignored, despite persistent lobbying by local Knox MP’s, Kim Wells and Nick Wakeling.
With an injection of funding from the Federal government of nearly half a billion dollars to start the project from Caulfield to Monash University Clayton, now is the right time to move forward and have a commitment to the next stage of preserving land for Rowville Rail.
The Liberal Nationals have consistently lobbied State governments for progress on Rowville Rail and only a Liberal Nationals Government will commit to the next stage of preserving land for the rail to run all the way to Rowville.
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Planning, David Davis:
“A Matthew Guy led Government will prioritise planning protections, so that a train service can be achieved. Unlike Labor who have never committed to Rowville Rail, the Liberal Nationals will give Rowville Rail the planning protection it desperately needs.
Labor have wedged their heels in the tram tracks and refused to budge on their alternative “tram plan”, hoping that a drawn-out discussion about trams will distract from their own lack of progress on Rowville Rail.
The Knox community are sick of waiting. This announcement provides an assurance that planning protections will be in place under a Liberal Nationals Government.”
Comments attributable to Member for Rowville, Kim Wells:
“This announcement for Rowville Rail is a much-needed step to protect the rail corridor.
Labor has not lifted a finger on Rowville Rail during their time in government and now the project is more crucial than ever.
Rowville locals want a rail line and have been very vocal in their advocacy for one. I am very proud to be able to take this significant step to protect the route for a future rail line all the way to Rowville.”
