Education systems needs radical shift in approach to autism
Reports today that a Victorian public primary school held a student with autism in a makeshift plywood room shows that we need a radical shift in the attitudes and approach in the education system in working with children with autism.
Attributable to Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bernie Finn:
Locking children in boxes or tiny rooms is something from another era.
If this allegation is true, it’s a sure sign Victoria needs a radical shift in the attitudes of many in the system toward children with autism.
This mistreatment of children is intolerable and the Minister should act immediately to ensure those responsible are removed from their duties. This should never be allowed to happen again.
