O’Donohue – Burgess: Liberal Nationals will open Somerville Police Station to the public

Liberal Nationals will open Somerville Police Station to the public

The new $16.3M Somerville Police Station, funded by the previous Liberal Nationals Coalition Government, was designed and built to be a fully functioning, publicly open new station for the Somerville and broader Mornington Peninsula communities. This important community safety project followed the election promise of the Member for Hasting, Neale Burgess before the 2010 election.

Victoria Police and its then Chief Commissioner, Ken Lay, committed in late 2014 to a public counter service at Somerville Police Station on the basis of the provision by government of new sworn police resources to enable it to do so.

Daniel Andrews’ decision to turn the Police Academy into a ghost town in 2015 and 2016 meant there weren’t the resources to open the station and it remains possibly the first completed police station that has never been open to the public. A Matthew Guy led Liberal Government will change that.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Police, Edward O’Donohue:

Under Daniel Andrews, scores of police stations have either been shut or had their opening hours cut. A Matthew Guy led Liberal Government will work with the Chief Commissioner to ensure that police stations are open, accessible and provided the resources they need to serve local communities.

Daniel Andrews’ failure to open the Somerville Police Station is a slap in the face to the local community and is further evidence that he simply doesn’t understand or care about the needs of the Somerville community.

The Liberal Nationals are committed to ensuring that appropriate additional uniformed general duties police are provided to Victoria Police to finally allow for the introduction of a public counter service and local police officers at Somerville Police Station.

Comments attributable to the Member for Hastings, Neale Burgess MP:

The Somerville community worked hard for more than a decade for a local police station with local police. I’m proud that a Guy Government will open it.

I’ve worked with the local community to see this Station constructed and I won’t rest until it’s opened and protecting this local community, as was always intended.
