Improving community safety in Prahran
Daniel Andrews has lost control of crime and only the Liberal Nationals will crack down on crime to ensure drug dealers, shoplifters and those who commit violence, feel the full force of the law.
That’s why a Liberal Nationals Government will get back in control of community safety by providing $1.5 million to extend the CCTV network, improve safety lighting and make other security infrastructure improvements at and around the Prahran public housing estates.
Since Daniel Andrews was elected, crime in Prahran has increased with drug related offences up by 88% and crimes against the person having increased by 17.7%
CCTV programs have been widely successful in improving residents’ feelings of safety and security as well as assisting Victoria Police in responding to crime.
We will work with the Council, Victoria Police and public housing tenants and housing providers towards identifying specific projects and locations.
This announcement follows other community focused crime prevention measures announced by the Liberal Nationals including:
- A $22 million rebuild of the Prahran police station
- Re-establish a ‘Police in Schools’ program, to allow police to better engage with young Victorians.
- Fund the establishment of a Victoria Police Mobile CCTV camera rollout and;
- Commit $2 million over four years to Neighbourhood Watch for local crime prevention initiatives.
The Liberal Nationals will also work with Victoria Police and with council to place a temporary police station at the Prahran public housing estate during the rebuild of the Prahran Police Station. This will ensure a strong police presence with access to police services is still available to the public.
Under Daniel Andrews, crime is out of control and only the Liberal Nationals are committed to ensuring all Victorians feel safe in their communities.
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Edward O’Donohue:
“A Matthew Guy Government will get back in control of community safety and make Victoria safe again.
Daniel Andrews has lost control of law and order, including in public housing. Everyone has a right to feel safe in their own home.”
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Housing, Georgie Crozier:
“The Liberal Nationals are committed to stamping out anti-social behaviour in and around public housing.
Crime is out of control under Daniel Andrews and vulnerable communities in Prahran are paying the price.”
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Prahran, Dr Katie Allen:
“Only a Matthew Guy led government will get back in control of community safety and deliver the community safety polices to keep residents in Prahran safe.
There is a clear choice at the next election between more of the same from Daniel Andrews and Matthew Guy who is delivering for local communities.”
