Make Victoria safe: $16 million for Police infrastructure on the Bellarine Peninsula

Daniel Andrews has lost control of crime, with gangs and thugs roaming at will, and terrorising local communities.

That’s why a Liberal Nationals Government will get back in control of community safety by investing $16 million to boost Victoria Police infrastructure facilities on the Bellarine Peninsula.

The Liberal Nationals’ infrastructure package will include building a new $15 million Leopold Police Station with capacity for 24/7 operation; as well as $1 million to upgrade and guarantee the future utilisation of Queenscliff, Portarlington and Drysdale Police Stations.

Crime data obtained from the Crime Statistics Agency reveals a surge in crime in Leopold since Daniel Andrews was elected with an overall crime increase of 70.6% and a 600% increase in serious assault. Further to this, there has been an 81.8% increase in motor vehicle theft.

The Liberal Nationals will make Victoria safe by introducing tough mandatory minimum sentences, strong bail and parole reforms and a plan that will crack down on youth gangs.

Frontline police numbers have fallen under Daniel Andrews with Police Association figures showing there are now 190 fewer uniform officers than in 2013 despite Victoria’s population increasing by over half a million.

Under Daniel Andrews we have also seen police stations that have either been shut or had their opening hours cut.

The Liberal Nationals have a clear plan to get back in control of community safety in Geelong, the Bellarine and the Surf Coast.

This commitment builds on the Liberals plan to get back in control of crime in Geelong including:

  • Deploying PSOs at the Geelong transport interchange
  • Delivering a Victoria Police shop front at Geelong Westfield
  • Make the Torquay Police Station 24/7
  • Expand the local CCTV network to include the Torquay foreshore
  • Reintroduce the Police in Schools programs for local schools across Geelong and the Bellarine
  • Implementing a Public Sex Offenders Register to keep our community, especially our children, safe.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Police, Edward O’Donohue:

“Where Daniel Andrews and Lisa Neville have failed, a Matthew Guy Government will get back in control of community safety and make Victoria safe again.

Not only is Police Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville currently under investigation by the Victoria Police Fraud and Extortion Squad for her involvement in the Labor rorts affair, she has failed to honour her 2014 election promise that the Queenscliff, Portarlington and Drysdale Police Stations would be open 16 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Daniel Andrews has lost control of law and order, only the Liberal Nationals will make Victoria safe by rebuilding and upgrading our police stations and is part of our plan to put the ‘Frontline First’.”

Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Bellarine, Brian McKiterick:

“It is vital that the Bellarine community has the resources it needs to fight crime and protect our communities when we need help the most.

I served in Victoria Police for 39 years and spent the last decade working on the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula, I understand firsthand the need to build a new station at Leopold and upgrade our existing stations.

That’s why the new Leopold Police Station is so important to help keep the local community safe.”
