Pesutto: Daniel Andrews put community safety last

Daniel Andrews put community safety last

Today, the Andrews Labor Government voted down Liberal Nationals amendments to the Bail Amendment (Stage Two) Bill 2017 that would have seen bail changes commence by 30 March 2018 rather than 1 October 2018.

Reform of our bail system is one of the most urgent challenges facing Victoria, yet Daniel Andrews has continued to delay bail changes.

The Liberal Nationals’ amendments would also have brought forward the commencement of the Bail Amendment (Stage One) Bill 2017 from 1 July 2018 to 30 March 2018. Although the Government has said today that certain of the Stage One changes will commence on 21 May 2018, that’s still two months longer than the amendment proposed.

Why the delay?

With the Bourke Street tragedy having occurred on 20 January 2017, the Andrews Labor Government has had 13 months to make changes to Victoria’s bail laws.

The Liberal Nationals have repeatedly called on Daniel Andrews to make bail laws an urgent priority in the Parliament.

If Daniel Andrews thought that bail changes were urgent, he would have supported our amendments.
