Ryan: Liberal Nationals back Scouts and Guides

Friday 2 November 2018

Liberal Nationals back Scouts and Guides

The rich tradition of Scouts and Guides will be stronger than ever before under an elected Liberal Nationals Government.

Shadow Minister for Young Victorians Steph Ryan announced a massive boost to scouts and guides at the Scouts Victoria annual report and presentations night, which will increase participation and upgrade club facilities, like halls and campsites, across the state.

The package includes $1.5 million to establish a new Scouts in Schools Program in up to 20 schools across the state, so more young people can share in the benefits of our iconic scouts clubs.

Trainers will be employed at participating schools, leading activities during lunch breaks. Running the program through schools will remove the cost and time barriers which stop many willing children joining their local Scouts club.

A further $4 million for building and facility improvements will be available to local clubs through the Scouts and Guides Infrastructure Fund on a matching basis, providing for up to $8 million in upgrades at local clubs across the state.

Scouts and Guides manage an extensive property portfolio and with more and more young Victorians joining both organisations over the past decade, support is required to secure these facilities for future club members and make sure they’re meeting growing demand.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Young Victorians, Steph Ryan:

“Scouts and Guides make an invaluable contribution in Regional Victoria and Melbourne, not only to the lives of young people, but to our entire community.

We know the structured learning programs offered by Guides and Scouts have built a strong foundation for young people to gain a range of skills that help with their personal development and self-esteem.

Building up groups like Scouts and Guides is also practical way government can positively engage with vulnerable young people so they can have a brighter future.”
