Liberal Nationals pledge $5 million towards community safety for the Jewish community

Today at the Community Security Group (CSG) in Caulfield North, local Member for Caulfield David Southwick MP and Shadow Minister for Community Safety Edward O’Donohue MP announced an elected Liberal Nationals Government will provide a $5 million grant towards the CSG’s Project Fortify.

Project Fortify is a comprehensive community safety plan which will deliver physical security works at a number of Jewish community installations across Melbourne.

Ranging from major building works to the improvement of access control or CCTV systems, these measures will dramatically improve the physical protection and security of 15 day school campuses, numerous crèches, 62 synagogues and over 100 communal organisations throughout Melbourne.

Regrettably, these community institutions are the target of rising anti-Semitic attacks, which a 2017 Report on Anti-Semitism in Australia released by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry indicated a 10% increase in anti-Semitic incidents from the previous year.

Jewish schools, synagogues and communal spaces should be equipped with the necessary security infrastructure.

The Community Safety Group’s CEO Ricky Pearl backed the announcement stating, “the Victorian Liberal Party’s commitment to provide $5 million in funding will go a long way to ensuring the safety of the Victorian Jewish community.”

This announcement comes on the back of a recent Liberal Nationals commitment of $5.25 million for security and maintenance upgrades at Melbourne’s Jewish schools and a $2 million commitment to relocate the Jewish Museum closer to the Holocaust Museum in Elsternwick.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Edward O’Donohue:

“The Liberals Nationals are committed to ensuring all Victorians are able to go about their daily lives free from fear, attack or abuse.

Security funding like this commitment is an important part of keeping our community safe.”

Comments attributable to Member for Caulfield, David Southwick:

“Project Fortify is a strong plan to boost community safety throughout the Jewish community and has never been more important given cases of anti-Semitic attacks are on the rise.

I’m proud that a Matthew Guy government will make such a significant contribution to the safety and security of Melbourne’s growing Jewish Community.”
