Liberals planning for the future of Geelong Gallery
An elected Liberal Nationals Government will take the first steps to expand the Geelong Gallery by providing $500,000 towards an updated business case that will ensure the best possible outcome and design for the Gallery’s future.
A particular focus of the expansion will be to improve and enhance Geelong’s arts and culture precinct and encourage international tourists to visit Geelong for an extended stay and get them out into our regions to experience all Victoria has to offer.
The Geelong Gallery is a vital cultural asset to Geelong and Victoria, and houses a magnificent collection of 19th, 20th and 21st century Australian and European painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and decorative arts.
A future expansion would allow for more of the permanent collection to be visible, encourage more options for major touring exhibitions and would be a key focus for activating the heart of Geelong.
Labor has been in government in Victoria for 15 out of the last 19 years and during that time, has given little assistance to Geelong’s arts and cultural precinct.
The Liberal Nationals are committed to investing in our regional centres and showcase all they have to offer.
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Arts and Culture, Heidi Victoria:
“Established in 1896, the Geelong Gallery is one of Australia’s leading and oldest regional art galleries.
The previous Liberal Government was the first to invest in Geelong’s cultural precinct. Having listened to the community we delivered the library and heritage centre, and the Courthouse arts hub.
Freya Fidge has been a fierce advocate for the Geelong Gallery and ensuring it continues to develop as a benchmark arts and cultural precinct.”
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Geelong, Freya Fidge:
“The local arts community has advocated on behalf of the historical Geelong Gallery and we are here today to tell everyone that their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Families and tourists have been coming and enjoying the artwork at the Geelong Gallery for generations.
With the Liberal Nationals’ plan for European-style High Speed Rail making Geelong just 32 minutes from Melbourne, a future expansion would bring many more tourists into Geelong to experience everything that we have on offer.”
