Liberal Nationals breathing life into Mordialloc Creek
A Liberal Nationals Government will ensure that the Mordialloc Creek is maintained and protected if elected in November.
An elected Matthew Guy-led government will spend $5.1 million on a comprehensive plan to:
- undertake remedial dredging to improve the health of the Creek;
- appoint a local Committee of Management to take responsibility for aspects of the waterway’s administration, including mooring and other infrastructure, and to undertake maintenance dredging;
- ensure a dredging schedule is implemented by the Committee that maintains access for creek users and ensures the environmental integrity of both the creek itself and importantly Port Phillip Bay; and
- install one additional floating jetty to facilitate safe access to vessels, particularly for loading and unloading and to allow safe disabled access for both regular and casual users.
The Mordialloc Creek is currently under the control of several authorities including Parks Victoria, the City of Kingston and Melbourne Water. VicRoads and Victrack also have authority over specific areas within the precinct. The result is an uncoordinated and unsatisfactory outcome for creek users.
The establishment of a properly constituted Committee of Management will ensure a coordinated and informed approach to the ongoing management of this unique and important resource.
The former Liberal Nationals Government invested in dredging upgrades but since the election of Labor, there has been no capital investment in Mordialloc Creek.
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Environment Nick Wakeling:
“Geoff Gledhill has worked with residents and local community groups to ensure the Mordialloc Creek is well maintained now and into the future.
Geoff is an excellent advocate for his local community, and this is just another example of how he will stand up for his electorate if elected in November.”
Comments attributable to Liberal candidate for Mordialloc, Geoff Gledhill:
“The iconic Mordialloc Creek is an important community asset delivering cultural, economic, recreational and environmental benefits and is seen by many as the heart of Mordialloc.
Todays’ announcement is clear evidence that the Liberal Nationals understand what these benefits mean to the community and is willing to support it by ensuring that everything is done to preserve and enhance this marvellous natural asset that is available for everyone to enjoy.
I have worked tirelessly with the local community to deliver this funding and if I’m elected as Member for Mordialloc, I will keep working hard and keep delivering.”
