$2.5 million pledge to upgrade Sandringham Hospital

If elected in November, a Victorian Liberal Nationals Government will contribute $2.5 million to upgrade the Sandringham Hospital through investing in new outpatient facilities.

The Sandringham Hospital is a much-loved part of our community and is critical to local health care needs. As part of Alfred Health, Sandringham Hospital contributes to a network of health facilities servicing close to one million residents in Bayside, Kingston, Glen Eira, Stonington, Port Phillip and Melbourne. The population of this catchment area will double within the next 20 years.

That’s why Brad Rowswell, Liberal candidate for Sandringham – together with Asher Judah, Liberal candidate for Bentleigh and Geoff Gledhill, Liberal candidate for Mordialloc have been working hard to ensure that Sandringham Hospital gets the investment it needs for the future.

The current Outpatient Facility, visited by thousands of patients annually, is housed in 1960s-built former sleeping accommodation for medical staff. The consulting rooms are refurbished bedrooms and the patient waiting areas are crammed. The current building is not accessible, not fit for purpose and needs to be replaced.

The Andrews Labor Government’s record on Sandringham Hospital is clear. In March 2016 Labor’s Health Minister threatened to reduce the hours of the Sandringham Hospital Emergency Department from 24 hours a day to 12 hours a day, potentially jeopardising the health of the local community.

By contrast, a future Liberal Nationals Government will keep the Sandringham Hospital Emergency Department open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Today’s funding announcement gives certainty to local residents and the Sandringham Hospital for many years to come. It also allows Alfred Health the opportunity to explore options for establishing an Early Pregnancy Assessment Service at Sandringham Hospital through their existing maternity services relationship with The Royal Women’s Hospital.

Comments attributable to the Shadow Minister for Health, Mary Wooldridge:

“As Melbourne’s population increases, we must plan appropriately for our future needs – this includes investment in health infrastructure at Sandringham Hospital. This $2.5 million investment is not about the next election, it is about meeting the needs of future generations.

The Andrews Labor Government threatened to reduce the hours of the Sandringham Hospital Emergency Department. Under a future Liberal Nationals Government, the Sandringham Hospital Emergency Department will remain open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Sandringham, Brad Rowswell:

“I was born at the Sandringham Hospital and understand first-hand how important it is to our local community. That is why I have been working with the Hospital and our local community to identify their next major infrastructure project.

This $2.5 million contribution will upgrade Sandringham Hospital and provide for future generations of resident in Bayside and neighbouring areas.”

Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Mordialloc, Geoff Gledhill:

“The Sandringham Hospital is a wonderful institution that has played an important part in the lives of so many local people. To this day ‘Sandy’ continues to provide outstanding service to our community, so I am delighted that Matthew Guy and the Liberal Nationals team have recognised this, and future needs, through this generous financial support.”

Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Bentleigh, Asher Judah:

“Four members of my family have been treated at the Sandringham Hospital. Our $2.5 million investment is great news for patients and their families.”
